Dollar Tree Shoppers Slam Secret Price Hikes: “It’s Not a Rumor Unfortunately”

They say they might as well go to 5 Below or T.J. Maxx if they're going to pay $5.

It’s time to rejigger our budgets, again. In breaking retail news, Dollar Tree has secretly raised its prices. By how much, you ask? Well, the amount may shock you. The TikTok account @sensationalfinds caught Dollar Tree employees swapping out the $1.25 shelf tags in the cleaning supplies and ceramic dishware aisles. But eagle-eyed shoppers are reporting price hikes across seasonal decor and storage categories as well. Here’s everything we know.

Dollar Tree has been hinting at a potential price hike for months now.

The rumors are true: Dollar Tree is upping its prices.

Company CEO Michael Creedon alleged the unfavorable news in a March earnings call with investors. Since the call, price hikes have been confirmed by both Dollar Tree employees and shoppers. The store’s new baseline price is jumping from $1.25 to $1.50, with some items now costing as much as $7.

Creedon noted the hikes, which could put some products at five times their original price tag, are reflective of the “very uncertain and volatile arena that we’re in.” His statements, of course, come on the heels of rising inflation in the U.S. and the Trump Administration’s imposed tariffs.

“In terms of the different price points, we look at that value, we look at convenience, and we look at discovery,” he explained. “We say, you know, where can we offer that and maybe move on some pricing as part of not just tariffs, but an inflationary cost environment that we’ve got to mitigate.”

But Dollar Tree doesn’t seem all too concerned about how price hikes will resonate with its consumers. Net profits and store traffic are both on the rise, despite the current economic climate, thanks to the spending habits and influx of higher-income shoppers, who have “stronger demand,” per Creedon.

But Dollar Tree is in a bit of a financial reshuffling. As Best Life previously reported, “The company is selling all failing Family Dollar locations for around $1 billion while expanding Dollar Tree’s footprint with 300 new locations this year—bringing the total to 3,200 stores nationwide.”

When do new Dollar Tree prices go into effect?

It depends on your neighborhood store, but according to Reddit, Dollar Tree’s new pricing model has already taken effect at many locations. In a thread, shoppers said they’ve noticed store workers replacing $1.25 stickers with $1.50 and $1.75 tags.

“Eyeglasses at my local Dollar Tree store are already going up to $1.50,” wrote one person.

“Sounded like it will be a roll out, but soon it’ll be everything,” commented another, who said they spoke with their Dollar Tree’s store manager.

A third said, “My local store just told me today that on Tuesday the prices of batteries and all of the plastic kitchen stuff are going up to $1.50.”

“My local store said that we should expect it to be more like a Dollar General soon. They have already started adding $5 items mixed in with other items (glass and plastic storage at my store). So you need to pay attention to the price tag unfortunately,” said a Redditor.

Dollar Tree employees have also weighed in on the matter.

“Plastics (like organizers) and cleaning supplies going up to $1.50; florals and seasonal going up to $1.75. Appears it will start 6/23,” wrote a user to which a DT employee responded, “I work at one, this is correct. i do unfortunately think more is to come!”

“I have seen multiple Dollar Tree employees on TikTok confirm a price increase coming by the end of June. It’s not for the entire store but a lot of items are going up to $1.50 or $1.75,” reads another post

Shoppers are fed up with the price hikes.

Dollar Tree’s imposed price hikes have shoppers in a tizzy. On Reddit, consumers dubbed the new prices “vast” and the result of corporate “greed.”

“This isn’t going to go well for them,” argued one user. Case in point: “I think most people come for the $1.25 price point. If we want to pay $5, we can go to 5Below, TJ Maxx, etc.”

“They might end up screwing themselves over greed,” wrote another.

“If prices continue to increase, I’d rather pay a bit more for an item at another store that will deliver on quality,” countered a frustrated Dollar Tree shopper.

“This.Is.Such.A.Bummer,” reads another post.

One consumer noted that the price hikes will likely have a negative impact on the overall shopping experience. “Man I really hope it doesn’t become the whole store being more expensive. Half the joy of a dollar tree was that you knew the price of everything.”

“It’s not shocking but so disheartening knowing that eventually Dollar Tree is just going to turn into Dollar General,” quipped another.
